  • Numbers At Home

The great thing about numbers is that you can do them anywhere and at any time night or day – no equipment necessary. With nursery age children you really do not need to go past the number ten and guess how many fingers we have? The absolute best way to start numbers with young children is counting fingers, first on their hands and then on your hands, and then on grandma’s and granddad’s hands, then there’s brothers and sisters, etc., etc. Keep it simple and start small – there’s no need to go past the number five until they are around two and a half years old.

Once they start saying the numbers¬†with you then count everything – and do it all the time – it’s a great game: The number of stairs, how many red cars will we see this morning? How many people are in this room? How many sausages are on this plate? How many crayons do I have? How many times have you been down that slide?

After all this counting and getting to the ripe old age of two and a half then single dice games are a great way to move numbers forward. Not only because you have to count the number of spots on the face of the dice that points upwards but also because you then have to count the number of places you advance in order to match the number on the dice.
